Court Dissolves 15-Year Old Marriage Over Wife’s Inability To Cook

“You are responsible for the damage done to your marriage because you failed to acquire basic requirements for living a happy marital life.”
This was the submission of the Court while dissolving the 15-year old marriage between Stephen Akinseloye and his wife, Opeyemi, over her inability to cook food in their matrimonial home.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, dissolved the marriage and asked the parties to go their separate ways.
An embittered Stephen, who is a sales attendant, had filed the suit before the Court to dissolve the marriage on the ground that his wife, Opeyemi, does not know how to cook while at the same time lacks manners.
Stephen, who lives in Elewura-Challenge area in Ibadan, told the Court that his wife, Opeyemi, had caused him so much pain by her immaturity and wanted the Court to dissolve the marriage so that he will have peace of mind.
Delivering judgment, the President of the Court, Chief Ademola Odunade, held that Opeyemi was responsible for the damage done to her relationship because she failed to acquire basic requirements for living a happy marital life.
Odunade consequently dissolved the marriage, citing irreconcilable differences as reasons. He granted custody of their only child to Opeyemi and ordered Stephen to paying N4, 000 monthly for the child’s upkeep.
In his testimony, Stephen said: ”Opeyemi cannot make simple eba. She puts too much salt in the food. I have shown her and corrected her but she has refused to learn. She is also clumsy. She destroyed my Plasma TV and lies on minor things. She has also refused to join me in prayers. I am a Catholic, she keeps going to Celestial Church,’’ Stephen said.
Opeyemi opposed the suit and denied some of the allegations levelled against her but that did not save the marriage as the Court saw merit and consequently dissolved the marriage.
