Reward For Excellence: Sanwo-Olu Gives Cash Awards To Medal Winners Of Abuja 2018 National Sports Festival

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has rewarded all Team Lagos athletes who won medals at the Abuja 2018 National Sports Festival.

The Governor’s magnanimity was in fulfilment of his promise to the athletes, who had done the state proud at the national tournament even though this was achieved during the last administration.

Youthful Team Lagos came fourth overall at the Abuja 2018 with 146 medals comprised 36 gold, 37 silver and 73 bronze medals.

Speaking during a brief ceremony held at the Indoor Sports Hall, Molade Okoya -Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere on Thursday the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Segun Dawodu asserted that since governance is a continuum, this government is fulfilling the promise made by the previous administration.

“I believe this will put your mind at rest. This government will continue to reward good performance. We urge you to put in your best and be loyal to Lagos State.

He assured that Governor Sanwo-Olu will continue to support the athletes. ” Please come back from Edo State where you will be representing our dear state at the coming National Sports Festival with glory for our state and for yourself as athletes.

The Executive Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku thanked the sports loving Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for redeeming his promise to the athletes, adding that the Governor’s gesture was done due to his passion for sports and recognition he always gives to good performance.

He said the State Government will, at all times, reward excellence in its athletes.

The Director General, Mr. Oluwatoyin Gafaar, said that, in pursuance of the spirit of continuity which the incumbent Lagos State Government is known for, not only in sports, Governor Sanwo-Olu graciously approved the rewards for the Abuja 2018 medal winners to serve as motivation for Team Lagos as they set sight on the 20th National Sports Festival in Edo State starting from this weekend.

“What we are doing today shows that any promise make by Mr. Governor, he always kept it. There is reward for loyalty.”

He therefore urged the athletes to continue to be loyal to our dear State, Lagos.

At the Awards Ceremony , athletes that won medals for Lagos State were rewarded as follows; Team Sports athletes received Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N750,000) for winning Gold Medals, Silver Medalist rewarded with Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000), while Bronze Medallist collected the sum of Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N350,000).

For individual sports, gold medalist were rewarded with the sum of Three Hundred Thousand Naira (N300,000), Silver Medalist received Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200,000), while all Bronze Medallist were rewarded with One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000).
