Rivers State Govt Distributes Flood Relief Materials To Khana, Gokana Victims

Posted on October 14, 2026

The Rivers State Government has commenced distribution of relief materials to flood-impacted residents across the state in liaison with local government council chairmen, Community Development Committees, CDCs, and other community representatives.

The Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, stated this during the distribution of food and non-food items to Khana and Gokana Local Government Areas at the Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder, NNS Pathfinder, Operational Base in Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr. Honour Sirawoo, Prof. Odu said the distribution was part of deliberate efforts to cushion the impact of the disaster on affected families.

According to her, the exercise was being carried out in collaboration with local government chairmen, community chiefs and CDCs to identify the most vulnerable and severely affected residents.

She noted that the government recognises the hardship caused by the floods and remains committed to reaching out to affected communities across the state.

The committee chairman stressed that the relief materials were temporary measures to cushion the impact of the disaster, while the government continues to pursue lasting solutions to the recurring flooding problem.

She urged residents to support government efforts by avoiding activities that contribute to flooding, particularly obstruction of drainage channels and waterways, observing that although some flooding incidents were caused by natural factors, including the state’s topography, others resulted from human activities.

In their separate responses, the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr. Thomas Bariere, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Daniel Doorka, assured that the materials would be distributed to those who need them most.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his benevolence towards flood-affected residents in Khana and commended Prof. Odu and the flood committee for providing succour to affected communities.

On his part, the Chairman of Gokana Local Government Council, Hon. Confidence Yima Deko, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon. Dugbor Baritoesan, also commended Governor Fubara and Prof. Odu for their efforts to provide relief to victims of the recent flooding.

He noted that the ongoing interventions demonstrated the government’s commitment to alleviating the suffering of flood victims and addressing challenges facing affected communities.
