Boost For Nigerian Judo As British Envoy Storms Commonwealth Games Trials

Hosts of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the United Kingdom on Wednesday added colour to the on-going trials with a visit to the Teslim Balogun Stadium venue in Lagos.

The Political Adviser, British Deputy High Commission, Mr. Wale Adebajo who came with a goodwill message from the Commonwealth Games hosts was received by the President of the Nigeria Judo Federation, Dr. Musa Oshodi, his deputy, Mrs Loveth Howell and the chairman of the Lagos State Judo Association, Mr. Sheriff Hammed.

Mr. Adebajo who praised the federation leadership said the City of Birmingham was ready to receive the Nigerian team.

The diplomat who witnessed some fights before taking his leave said he was impressed with the participation of female judokas.

Reacting to a reporter’s question, Mr. Adebajo said he was impressed with the level of competition in the trials.

“I am impressed with the trials especially with the number of women participating.

“I am looking forward to seeing these judokas in Birmingham and I pray that they will be the ones to get the first judo gold medal in the Commonwealth Games for Nigeria”. 

Earlier in a prepared speech, Mr Adebajo said the Birmingham 2022 Games was one of a series of major events for the year “that will showcase the United Kingdom culture and creativity and strengthen our international connections”.

He said the Games which was 125 days away would be a celebration of Commonwealth values of humanity, equality and diversity.

Dr. Oshodi thanked the envoy for his visit and said the federation was very grateful for  the gesture. 

He promised that Nigeria would take a worthy team to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. He said the visit of the diplomat was inspiring adding that Nigeria will not disappoint at the Games.
