The leadership crisis rocking the Igbo Speaking Community, Lagos State, has taken a new dimension as the new President General, Chief Chukwudi Chinye, has dragged former President, Chief Sunday Udeh, to the High Court of Lagos State.
PMEXPRESS reports that the suit, filed at the Ikeja Division of the High Court, seeks judicial interpretation of who is the authentic President General of the association following the removal of Chief Udeh at a General Assembly meeting.
What Chinye Is Praying Court To Do
In the originating summons sighted by PMEXPRESS, Chief Chukwudi Chinye, through his counsel, is praying the court for five major reliefs.
They include a declaration that Chief Sunday Udeh ceased to be President General of the Igbo Speaking Community, Lagos State, from 5th September, 2026, when a vote of no confidence was passed against him at the General Assembly meeting held at the National Secretariat in Surulere, Lagos.
He is also seeking a declaration that he, Chief Chukwudi Chinye, is the duly elected President General of the Igbo Speaking Community, having been elected at the same General Assembly meeting by stakeholders drawn from 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas of Lagos State.
Other reliefs include an order of perpetual injunction restraining Chief Sunday Udeh, his agents, privies, cohorts or representatives from parading himself as President General or performing any function in that capacity.
Chief Chinye is further seeking an order restraining Chief Udeh from accessing, operating from or issuing directives from the National Secretariat of the Igbo Speaking Community located at Surulere, Lagos, which is the official headquarters of the association.
He also prayed for such further or other orders as the court may deem fit to make in the circumstances of the case.
Why New President Went To Court
PMEXPRESS gathered that the decision to approach the court was taken after Chief Udeh allegedly continued to parade himself as President General despite his removal.
Sources close to the new executive disclosed that Chief Udeh has continued to issue press statements, convene meetings and invite members of the public as President General, a situation that has created confusion and division among members.
” The General Assembly is the highest decision making organ of the Igbo Speaking Community. It has spoken. It removed Chief Sunday Udeh and elected Chief Chukwudi Chinye. Despite that, Chief Udeh continues to parade himself as President General. We had no choice than to go to court to protect the constitution and stop the confusion, ” a chieftain who is a member of the new executive told PMEXPRESS on Sunday night.
It was also gathered that the new President General, Chief Chinye, has already taken over the National Secretariat at Surulere and has commenced administrative duties, while Chief Udeh operates from outside.
General Assembly That Removed Udeh
Recall that Chief Sunday Udeh was removed as President General at a General Assembly meeting held on 5th September, 2026, at the National Secretariat in Surulere, Lagos.
The General Assembly, which is the highest decision making organ of the community according to its constitution, was attended by LGA Coordinators, women leaders, youth leaders and other critical stakeholders from across the state.
PMEXPRESS reports that the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the association was not present at the General Assembly meeting where Chief Sunday Udeh was removed.
The BOT, which is the custodian of the constitution, was not at the meeting. The removal was carried out solely by the General Assembly members present.
At the same meeting where Udeh was removed, Chief Chukwudi Chinye was elected as the new President General to pilot the affairs of the association.
Council Of Elders Yet To Submit Report To BOT
Meanwhile, PMEXPRESS reports that the Council of Elders of the Igbo Speaking Community, led by Eze John Nwosu, is yet to write its report and submit to the Board of Trustees (BOT) for further action.
The Council of Elders was mandated to investigate the crisis rocking the association, including the controversial crowning of Obi of Lagos and issuance of Ezendigbo Gburugburu certificates.
A source disclosed that the Council held a meeting with Chief Udeh where he allegedly admitted in a voice note selling certificates for money.
The Council is said to be compiling its report, including minutes of the meeting and the viral voice note, before submitting to the BOT.
” The Council of Elders has not submitted its report to the BOT. They are still writing the report. Once they submit, the BOT will review and take final decision, ” the source said.
What Happens Next In Court
The case filed by Chief Chinye is expected to be assigned to a judge at the Ikeja Division this week for hearing.
Once assigned and served, Chief Sunday Udeh is expected to file his defence and the court will determine who is the authentic President General of the Igbo Speaking Community, Lagos State.
As of the time of filing this report, Chief Udeh is yet to file any response to the suit.
The court battle is expected to finally put to rest the lingering leadership tussle that has divided the Igbo community in Lagos for months.
