As more Nigerians consider relocating abroad or returning home in 2026, one question keeps coming up: where does your money actually go furthest?
With inflation and exchange rates shifting daily, we compared the cost of living in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, against London in the United Kingdom and Toronto in Canada using August 2026 rates. For this comparison, $1 equals ₦1,550. £1 equals ₦2,100. $1 Canadian Dollar equals ₦1,380.
The goal is simple: to help you understand what ₦1 million can realistically cover in each city.
1. Housing and Rent: The Biggest Gap
Housing remains the biggest expense and the biggest difference between the three cities.
In Lagos, a decent 1 bedroom apartment in areas like Yaba or Surulere costs between ₦2.5 million and ₦4 million per year. That means ₦3 million can cover a full year of rent.
In London, a 1 bedroom in the city centre goes for between £1,800 and £2,400 per month. That is ₦45 million to ₦60 million per year in Naira equivalent. In Toronto, the same apartment ranges from $2,400 to $3,200 Canadian Dollars per month, which is ₦39 million to ₦52 million per year.
Reality check: ₦3 million in Lagos covers 12 months of rent. In London, it will not cover one month. However, Lagos renters must also budget separately for generator fuel, diesel, water, and security. In the UK and Canada, rent typically includes power, water, and heating.
2. Food and Groceries: Daily Survival
Food inflation has affected all three countries, but the impact feels different.
For one person in Lagos, monthly groceries now cost between ₦180,000 and ₦250,000. A 50kg bag of rice is about ₦65,000. A dozen eggs is ₦3,500. A loaf of bread is ₦2,200.
In London, monthly groceries for one person range from £250 to £350. That is ₦525,000 to ₦735,000. A 5kg bag of rice costs about £12 and a pack of eggs is £3.50.
In Toronto, monthly groceries range from $400 to $550 Canadian Dollars. That is ₦552,000 to ₦759,000. A 10kg bag of rice costs about $25 Canadian Dollars.
The twist is that Nigerian food abroad costs three times more. A plate of jollof rice and chicken that sells for ₦4,000 in Lagos can cost £18 in London. Many Nigerians abroad now cook at home to cut costs.
3. Transport: From Danfo to Tube
Transport in Lagos is cheaper but time consuming. Daily transport using Danfo and BRT costs between ₦1,000 and ₦2,500. An Uber ride across Lagos ranges from ₦5,000 to ₦12,000. Fuel is currently ₦1,280 per litre.
In London, a monthly Oyster Card for public transport is £170, which is ₦357,000. An Uber trip costs between £25 and £40.
In Toronto, a monthly TTC pass is $156 Canadian Dollars, which is ₦215,000. An Uber trip costs between $30 and $50 Canadian Dollars.
While Lagos wins on price, commuters often spend 2 hours in traffic. In London and Toronto, you can cross the city in about 45 minutes with reliable trains and buses.
4. Healthcare and Education
Healthcare is another major factor in the decision to stay or relocate.
In Lagos, a consultation at a private hospital costs between ₦20,000 and ₦50,000. Private primary and secondary school fees range from ₦800,000 to ₦3 million per year.
In London, healthcare under the NHS is free for residents. A private GP visit is about £80. University tuition for local students is £9,250 per year.
In Toronto, healthcare is free with OHIP for residents. University tuition for local students ranges from $8,000 to $15,000 Canadian Dollars per year.
For many Nigerians abroad, free and stable healthcare is a key reason for staying. For those at home, private healthcare remains the main option.
5. So What Can ₦1 Million Buy You in 2026?
In Lagos, ₦1 million can cover about 4 months of rent in a decent area, plus 4 months of food, transport, and still leave some savings.
In London, ₦1 million will cover about 2 weeks of rent and 3 weeks of food. After that, there is nothing left.
In Toronto, ₦1 million will cover about 3 weeks of rent and 3 weeks of food. After that, you will need more money.
The Verdict for Nigerians in 2026
Lagos: Your money stretches further, but you manage power cuts, traffic, and security concerns. It is best for business owners and people earning in dollars who can leverage the exchange rate.
UK and Canada: Everything is expensive, but you get stable power, public healthcare, and salaries in pounds and dollars. It is best for professionals and students who can earn and save in foreign currency.
Because of this, many Nigerians are now adopting hybrid living. They earn in pounds and dollars abroad, then build and invest in Lagos. A monthly remittance of ₦500,000 from abroad can be life changing for families in Lagos.

You didn’t talk about minimum income in each of the countries but you are talking about cost. What is the average earning of a British and what is the average earning of a Nigerian in Pound Sterling?
