Driver, 28, Docked For Battering Police Officer On Highway While Performing Duty

A Police Sergeant, Ismaila Ewumi, attached to the Ikotun Division in Lagos State, had a nasty experience while performing his lawful duty on the highway as he accosted an angry driver, who beat him mercilessly and injured him in the process.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the driver, Lukmon Akerode, allegedly battered him with fist blows and inflicted injury on his body before he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.
The incident happened on 1st July, 2024, at Orope Junction, where Sergeant Ewumi was performing his lawful duty as a traffic officer.
The suspect, Akorode, has been arrested and charged for allegedly assaulting the victim under the Criminal Laws of the State.
According to the Police, the victim was busy performing his lawful duty before the driver reportedly contravened the Lagos State traffic law and was accosted by the Police officer.
There was altercation between the duo and in the process, the driver rained several blows on him and injured him before he was eventually rescued. The Police later mobilized and arrested him for his conduct.
After interrogation, he was charged before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for the alleged offence.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.K. Dosumu-Uthman, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned till 29th July, 2024, for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
