A 34-year old private driver, Dayo Olamilekan, has been arraigned before a Court in Lagos State and sentenced to two years imprisonment without an option of fine for duplicating his boss’ car key and stealing it at night.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 1st June, 2023, at Eagle Close, NEPA Bus Stop, Ijegun area of Lagos State, where the owner of the car, Joe Onukwube, resides and engaged Olamilekan as his private driver.
The owner, Onukwube, bought a Honda car with registration number, AAA 953FW and sought for a driver. Olamilekan applied and got employed as his driver not knowing that he had another motive.
After his employment, he went and duplicated the car key since after work,  he will park the car in his boss’ house and go home after dropping the key.
On the particular day, he parked the car and handed the key over to the owner and left his house. While going home, he used his duplicated key, stole the car and drove to Oyo State in order to sell it.
However, he ran out of luck while  negotiating the price for the car with the buyer. The person, who wanted to buy the car, became suspicious because of the amount of money he mentioned and contacted the Police. He was accosted, arrested and detained at the station for interrogation.
During interrogation, he confessed that he stole the car from his boss with the duplicate key and wanted to sell it before he was arrested.
The Police contacted the owner; the car was recovered and brought back to Lagos. And having been found culpable, he was subsequently charged before the Isolo Magistrate Court for stealing under the Criminal Law of the State.
He pleaded guilty.
The prosecutor, Oje Uagbale, then presented the facts of the matter and asked the Court to sentence him accordingly to serve as deterrent to others who might want to commit similar crime.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O.A Akokhia, found him guilty as charged and sentenced him accordingly.
