Edo State has confirmed 185 cases of Lassa fever since the outbreak of the epidemic in the state, with the government reiterating the need for residents to maintain good environmental health and sanitation habits as well as proper hygiene in the handling and preparation of food.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Obehi Akoria, while speaking to journalists in Benin City, said the Government is stepping up efforts to contain the epidemic.

She said the Government is working with traditional and religious leaders and heads of local government administration, among others, to ensure a safe, healthy and clean environment.

Prof. Akoria noted, “Edo State has confirmed 185 Lassa fever cases since the outbreak of the disease in the state. The fatality rate stands at 14 percent and this is not acceptable to the Edo State Government”.

“The intervention of the Edo State Government is targeted at reducing the number that fall ill with Lassa fever as we focus on downstream approaches that require ownership and participation.”

“We are working with traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and heads of local government administration, as well as the ministries and agencies, including the Ministries of Environment and Community and Chieftaincy Affairs. We are also working with the Edo State Waste Management Board.”

“I call on the people to improve their food and environmental hygiene in the state,” she urged.

The Commissioner further disclosed that the state government is in partnership with over 230 local healthcare professionals in Edo to bring over 65 specialists and healthcare professionals from America to provide free healthcare services to over 4000 persons in the state.
