A Lagos resident, Engr. Olufemi Omoola Fasheun, has raised alarm and appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police over an alleged plan by suspected land grabbers to take over his father’s property in Lagos State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that Fasheun disclosed to journalists that the property, located at No. 10 Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Lagos, was acquired by his father, the late Engineer Olawanle Ebenezer Fasheun, in 1961 and that they had lived on the property for 60 years.
The America returnee stated that his father died in 2004 and that immediately after his death some alleged land grabbers, “Omonile” started laying claims to the land.
He stated:
“They brought some fake papers and they went to Court in Ajah, not even in Ikeja to lay claim that the land belongs to them”.
“Their sponsors are some notorious land grabbers in Lagos State, and a chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
“In 2021, the APC chieftain brought some Police officers from Zone 2 Police Command, they arrested everyone they saw at the premises and locked them up. They brought bulldozers and brought down some parts of the building.”
“I went to the Zone 2 of the Nigeria Police and even the land grabbers office, but I couldn’t make any headway. I only found out a few months ago that the man wrote a petition against me to Zone 2 Police Command that I trespassed on his land, a land that we have occupied for 60 years.”
“The Attorney General of Lagos then issued an arrest warrant against me. So, they now joined forces to enter the land and claimed that it belongs to them through the land and building departments.”
“I want to appeal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that this is not the only land here. They are giving Lagos State and Nigeria a bad name. People like us have spent many years in the United States of America, we want to come back home and invest in this country,” he said.
Engr. Fasheun stated that nobody will take their property and enjoined anybody that is going through the same challenge to consult Lawyer For Reform Group so that they could fight it together.
“We want a society that people would be proud of. Lagos State is the center of excellence and things like this should not be happening there.”
“They broke into this place four times and anytime they come, they break things and steal our property and we keep buying these things back.
They stole generators and other items. The last time they came here, they stayed for four days before we were able to chase them out. The President and the Governor should come to our aid.”
“Democracy is about the government of the people. One of them said that he bought this place in 1994, when my father was still alive, how did he do that. He brought a fake paper that we submitted to the office of the land grabbers.
We know nothing about it. They are going about saying that they owned the land. I am appealing to the Governor, the President and the new IGP to clean up this state and country,” he said.
In a statement, the President of Center for Human and Socio-economic Rights, Comrade Alex Omotehinse and the Executive Project Director, Lawyers for Reform Group/Principal Partner, Juryman Associates Chambers, Barr. Aare Oladotun Hassan, spoke against the activities of land grabbers in Lagos State.
The groups stated that they are committed to ensuring protection of fundamental and social justice rights, “promoting peace building, and legal intervention to rescue Mr. Olufemi Fasheun, the bonafide owner of the property known referred to as ‘victim’.
The group stated:
“On his behalf, we urgently demand for onward intervention of the President, Asiwaju Tinubu, Gov. Sanwo-Olu alongside IGP, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to accelerate due diligent investigation and prosecution of anyone found culpable no matter how highly placed at a Court of competent jurisdiction accordingly”.
They stated that some land grabbers/accused persons also did a petition dated the 9th of March, 2023 prior to that of the victim’s petition, where they also allegedly made unfounded accusations against the victim, who is resident in the USA then.
It stated that Fasheun’s petition was for the Police to investigate and prosecute on the allegations of the four attacks by the accused, who resorted to self-help, malicious vandalization of his property, stealing, threat to his life and that of his workers and purporting to carry out execution of a non-existent Court judgment in suit N0. ID/1375/2011 by the accused.
“Documents presented to prove ownership of Fasheun’s land.Certified True copy of Deed of Conveyance dated the 10th of January, 1961 with registration N0. 6/6/431 registered at Ibadan.
“Survey Plan of the same date as above.Power of Attorney dated the 8th of June, 2003. Certified true copy of the judgment of the High Court of Lagos State dated 10th January, 2019 with suit No. ID/68M/2009, affirming the ownership of Mr. Femi Fasheun as the bonafide owner of the house and land at 10, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Lagos State,” they said.
“We shall appreciate all Nigerians onward accelerated concerted support and efforts to stop land grabbing menace in Lagos State under any guise of demolition of innocent Nigerian citizens properties, and the need to achieve respite for the victim’s property and peaceful habitation of his property respectfully. Injustice anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere” the group stated.
