Five Unforgettable Moments That Made Showmax’s ‘Wura’ A Modern Classic
The Showmax Original, Wura, wasn’t just a telenovela; it was a cultural phenomenon that gripped the audience with its intricate plotlines, the magnetic presence of its lead character, exceptional delivery by the cast and moments that left everyone absolutely speechless.
While the entire show was a rollercoaster of emotions and intrigue, certain scenes have buried themselves in our memories, solidifying Wura’s place as a modern classic.
Here are five unforgettable moments that prove just that:
The Deaths in the first episodes
From the jump, Wura made it clear that nobody was safe and she would take out anyone who dared to stand in her way. The unexpected murder of Pa Kuti immediately raised the stakes and introduced the audience to who Wura Amoo Adeleke was. A move that announced, “This is not your average telenovela.”
Femi’s death was another indicator of how ruthless Wura can be. Although Femi got greedy and showed that he had almost the same number of lives as a cat, he still managed to meet his untimely demise, courtesy of Wura.
The Ceremonial Arrest
Wura’s arrest by her husband, Tony, in front of the media during a press conference has to be one of the most jaw-dropping moments from season 1. You can refer to it as the ultimate betrayal and maybe a perfect full-circle moment for a woman who’s built her empire on secrets and manipulation. Watching her experience that first-hand public embarrassment, courtesy of her beloved husband, was definitely one for the books.
Kanyinsola vs Wura
Kanyinsola must have been that nemesis that the devil sent to frustrate Wura. She was relentless, bold and did not hold back in attempting to show Wura that she was a match and would go at her as much as she wanted. But the question is, “ Was she a match?”
From the moment Kanyin was introduced in the series, she did not allow Wura to breathe; but trust Wura to be a worthy opponent and not back out without a fight or getting the upper hand at some point.
The beating Kanyin received from Wura in season 3 was definitely interesting to watch. Kanyin must have regretted her action as soon as she got the first hit.
Love that Chooses Friendship:
This definitely has to make the list, because it is not every day you see two older women who are best of friends be in love with the same man. This was the case of Iyabo and Labake.
Iyabo, who had her own complicated feelings for Fola, steps back and pushes him towards her friend, Labake. Who would have thought Mama Mide would be so selfless, especially as she was a widow who also needed the companionship.
The Tragic Final Act
In the finale episode, Wura sets her once-loyal protege Tumi ablaze in a fit of rage and desperation. Upon realising that Tumi was her daughter, she took a gun and killed herself.
Most fans expected Wura’s death to be more gruesome and disgraceful, with her secrets exposed and her finally facing the consequences of her actions. However, we can agree that Wura’s death was basically her saying, “I decide how I go down”, and she did. We stan a queen who knows what she wants.
Wura didn’t just go out — she exploded.
These moments are just a few examples of what makes Wura such a compelling and unforgettable series that kept viewers glued for 3 seasons across 260 episodes. With its fearless storytelling, unforgettable performances (shoutout to the cast and crew), and moments that live rent-free in our heads, it has earned its place as a modern classic.
