Under the administration of Governor Alex Otti, Aba has been transformed into one of the best-powered cities in Nigeria, with the rest of the state rapidly catching up. This reliable electricity is currently produced by gas turbines.
While citizens are already celebrating this progress, Governor Otti recently expressed delight over a proposed $145 million solar manufacturing plant in the state. He described the investment as a major boost to industrialisation, job creation, and economic growth. Given this momentum, it would come as no surprise if his administration soon announces further electricity generation via hydro, wind, biomass, or even nuclear energy.
For context, South Africa generates the most electricity in Africa by a wide margin, accounting for around 25% of the continent’s total output with an installed capacity of about 60 gigawatts (GW). Its mix relies on coal (about 80%), nuclear, hydropower, wind, and solar. Under Governor Otti’s forward-thinking leadership, transforming Abia into a world-class state is becoming a reality.
