The video was viral. It’s content was disturbingly alarming. We are gradually but sadly, becoming a nation where core values are daily taking flights to unknown destinations. A nation where anything goes. No generation is exempted from this macabre season. It is a season of long knives on our cultural values, a festival of shame. Are we really ashamed?

Whose daughter is this Goddy Mbakwe Precious, a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University who was the dramatic persona in that vile and viral video fighting her lecturer in such beastly manner? I have great pity for her parents. I weep. Am sure they are weeping too. “Streams of tears,” Psalm 119:136 said, “flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.” The Bible said. The Holy Book is eternally right. I am sure again that her parents followed the biblical injunctions, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it” in raising her. Fortunately, she like most “modern kids” have their own ways. It doesn’t matter where the ways lead. They are blind, passionately arrogant, reckless and stupid with a terrible entitlement mentality. Who do we blame? The parents or the children or the society? Each is interwoven with the other. Goddy could have been any parent’s daughter. But she is her parents’ daughter. A beloved child. I am certain her parents did not teach her the wrong ways of life or instructed her to engage in selfies on the campus. I am more certain that her parents did not train her to react and act the way she did against the lecturer. I am sure again her parents were traumatized by the viral video involving their beloved daughter in that animal fight. Come to think of it, her mum is said to be a lecturer at the same Nnamdi Azikiwe where the ugly incident took place. What shame the poor mother would face among her colleagues. The caustic back talks, sneering eye looks whenever and wherever she passes on the campus. The burden of motherhood you would say.

She was expelled from the institution. The action was fast like lightening. It was done to redeem the honors of the school as well as we would always say, serve as a deterrent to others. Goddy might taken a meal of shame. She however, needs a mea culpa to purge herself of the shame. She should clear eyes and clean her character. She must devote time to walk on herself, rein in the bad sides, have a self deflection and come to terms with the realities of life. Let her avoid the temptations of trying to be the poster girl.

She has the time, energy, let her not insist on the binary choice. Let her note, the social media she loves so much, the love that brought her the pains will always follow all her steps.

Let her change for good and disappoint those who think she cannot.
