In a significant move to promote unity and preserve history, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has restored Abakaliki Street in Awka, which was previously renamed “Club Road” in 2018 under the administration of former Governor Willie Obiano.

The street holds sentimental value for Pa. Peter Uzodimma, who cleared and graded it in 1975 and officially registered it with the authorities. Uzodimma’s efforts symbolize the strong bond between the people of Anambra and Ebonyi states.

The renaming of Abakaliki Street to Club Road sparked controversy, with some urging Governor Soludo to reverse the decision, citing the need for unity and reciprocity between Anambra and Ebonyi states.

Governor Soludo’s decision to restore Abakaliki Street demonstrates his commitment to preserving historical legacies and promoting peaceful coexistence. This move is seen as a gesture of goodwill, acknowledging the long-standing relationship between the two states.

The restoration of Abakaliki Street has been welcomed by many, who view it as a step towards strengthening ties between Anambra and Ebonyi states. As Pa. Uzodimma aptly put it, “Abakaliki street is more than a name; it is my contribution to history.” Governor Soludo’s action underscores his dedication to honoring the history and cultural heritage of Anambra State.
