Harvard-Trained Gynaecologist, Prof Ozumba To Receive AMTY Lifetime Achievement Award

Former Vice-Chancellor of UNN and Harvard-trained Gynaecologist, Prof Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba, is among exceptional individuals to receive award at the 4th edition of AMTY award billed for 22nd March, 2024.

 

Ozumba is being celebrated for his contributions to the medical profession in Nigeria. His recognition is also for his impressive record as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

 

The renowned medical professional has produced numerous medical professionals in the country. According to a source”Majority of Gynaecologists you see in this country passed through him”.

 

Apart from Medicine, Ozumba is a seasoned administrator, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor, UNN was marked with great Achievements.

 

Ozumba hails from Abba Community in Anambra State. He served as the 14th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) from 2014 to 2019.

 

With a career spanning over four decades, Professor Ozumba has made groundbreaking contributions to medical research, academic innovation, and institutional leadership. His tenure as Vice-Chancellor was marked by exceptional advancements in research, technology, and global collaborations, solidifying UNN’s position as a leader in higher education in Nigeria and beyond.

 

An accomplished scholar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Professor Ozumba holds multiple fellowships from prestigious institutions, including the Nigeria Postgraduate Medical College, West African College of Surgeons, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in England, American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in the USA, and American College of Surgeons in the USA. He has trained at esteemed institutions like the University of Lagos, Harvard School of Public Health, and Crawley Hospital, England.

 

During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ozumba spearheaded numerous innovative initiatives, such as establishing the Roar Nigeria Hub, the first university-embedded incubator in sub-Saharan Africa, and the Lion Science Park, the first university-embedded science park in continental Africa. He also led the production of the first electric vehicle in Nigeria, known as Lion Ozumba 5531, and pioneered a university-led tractor assembly initiative to promote agricultural technology. Under his leadership, UNN achieved its first-ever ranking by Times Higher Education and maintained its position as Nigeria’s top university by Google Scholar Citations.

 

Professor Ozumba’s extensive research portfolio includes significant contributions in maternal and child health, gynaecological oncology, reproductive health, and health systems strengthening. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and served as an editorial consultant for international medical journals.

 

Recognized for his outstanding leadership and academic excellence, Professor Ozumba has received over 55 national and international awards, including the National Productivity Order of Merit, National Icon Award, and Kwame Nkrumah Africa Leadership Award. He is dedicated to community service, serving as an adviser to the Enugu State Health Reform Team and coordinating free medical outreaches in Anambra State.
