Here’s Why Childbirth Is Becoming Less Of A Life Or Death Situation In Nigeria

Posted on August 30, 2021

Childbirth is a natural process and is deemed an important social event for both the individual and the wider community.

Most women experience the joys of normal childbirth, however, complications during this event cannot be predicted, turning this source of joy into a nightmare.

In Nigeria, this is a persistent reality. Available data shows that over 53,000 women die annually at childbirth and over 240,000 children die in the first 28 days after birth due to poor facilities, poverty, illiteracy amongst others.

Developing a sense of obligation to combat this teeming problem, Coca-Cola, in 2018, collaborated with the Federal government through the Federal Ministry of Health, the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals and an NGO, Medshare International Inc., to launch the Safe Birth Initiative – a program intended to improve the maternal and neonatal mortality rate in Nigeria.

Three years later, the company has recorded impressive feats in actualizing its goals for the initiative, which is to contribute significantly in helping the country attain the SDG 3 which focuses on good health and wellbeing impacting over 12,000 mothers and babies.

With an investment of about N3.8billion, Coca-Cola have been able to strengthen the capacity of selected public hospitals through procurement of vital maternal and neonatal medical equipment, repairs of broken-down equipment as well as provision of capacity training to Biomedical Engineers/technicians and end users.
