A housewife, Elizabeth Gift, has been sentenced to 18 months for using her lawyer husband’s N2m on a failed money doubling scam after she had lied that she was attacked by armed robbers in Kano State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was the judgment of the Kano State Magistrate Court, which sentenced her accordingly for defrauding her husband, Barrister Benefice, of the sum of N2,050,000 after he sent her to deposit the money in a bank.
The prosecutor, Barrister Jamilu Abubakar, told the Court that the defendant was sometime in April, 2023, sent by her husband, Benefice, to deposit the said amount in the bank, but that she returned and said that some people used weapons and collected the money from her.
However, the investigations by the Police revealed that the money was not stolen from her and that she deliberately took it to some people with the agreement that they would make more money for her. She was eventually duped and lied to her husband in order to cover up and it eventually leaked.
The matter was reported to the Police;  she was arrested and detained for interrogation over the alleged conduct. And during interrogation, she confessed that she was duped by money doublers and she lied to cover up.
The Police found her culpable and subsequently charged her before the Court for the alleged offence.
She pleaded guilty.
The prosecutor then asked the Court having presented the facts of the matter,  to sentence her accordingly to serve as deterrent to others who might try such offence in future.
The Presiding Magistrate, Halima Nasir, sentenced her to 18 months in prison and ordered that she should pay her husband the sum of N2,050, 000 for restitution but gave her an option of N50,000 fine for the 18 months in prison sentence.
She was remanded in custody at the correctional centre pending when she will perfect the conditions given by the Court or serve her sentence in line with the Court judgment.
