How Bus Driver Crushed Girl, 5, To Death While Trying To Evade Police Arrest

A 50-year old bus driver, Oyegunju Riliwan, has landed in trouble in Lagos State for allegedly crushing a 5-year old girl to death while trying to escape from Police arrest over a traffic offence on the highway. 

 

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at lyana-Ipaja Round about in the front of Ecobank while picking up passengers and obstructing the traffic on the road.

 

He has been charged for the alleged murder by causing the death of the victim, Miracle Nnamdi.

 

According to the Police, the driver was picking up passengers with his Suzuki bus on the road and when he sighted the traffic Police officer, he quickly drove off to escape being apprehended.

 

While trying to escape, the driver crushed the victim and she died in the process. He was eventually arrested and detained at the Gowon Police station for the alleged offence.

 

He was consequently charged before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for the alleged offence having been interrogated and found culpable by the Police.

 

The charges read:

COUNT 1:- “That you, Oyegunju Riliwan ‘M’ of No 7 Muritala Muhammed Street Balogun Bus Stop, Igando Lagos on the 4th of March, 2025 at about in the Ikeja Magisterial District, being the driver in charge of one Suzuki bus with Registration No. KSF267YK, drove the vehicle on the public highway in a manner dangerous to other road users and transport sector reform laws of Lagos State, Nigeria 2021.”

 

COUNT 2:”That you, Oyegunju Riliwan ‘M’ on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, drove same vehicle on the public highway and cause the death of One Miracle Nnamdi ‘F’ age 5yrs of No. 14 Omotoso Street, Pleasure Abule Egba Lagos and thereby Committed an Offence Contrary to transport Sector Reform Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2021.”

 

COUNT 3:-“That you, Oyegunju Riliwan ‘M’ on the same date, time and place in lyana-Ipaja Round about in the front of Ecobank, picked passengers and obstructed the traffic and thereby Committed an Offence Contrary to Section 15 (1) of the RTL Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2021.*

 

The Court did not grant him bail following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for legal advice.

 

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. T.A. Popoola, ordered his remand in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending the outcome of the DPP’s legal advice and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP for advice.

 

The matter was adjourned till 7th April, 2025, for mention for the report of DPP’s advice to be available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
