A 39-year-old man, Lawrence Omatule, who recruited himself as a medical doctor, has landed in trouble in Lagos State after he allegedly performed a surgical operation on a woman, Fatima Isaah and killed her in the process.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on April 1, 2022, at Feloban Alpha Convalescent Home located at No. 15, Adesanya Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos State.
Following the death of the victim, Omatule was arrested by the Police in the area and transferred to the SCID, Yaba, for further investigation over the death of the victim.
After thorough interrogation, the Police found Omatule culpable for illegal surgery and subsequently charged him before the Yaba Magistrates Court for murder, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment if he is tried and found guilty before the Court.
Omatule was arraigned on Thursday on two-count charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
The Court did not take his plea following a motion by the prosecutor, Supol Rita Momah, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice.
The Presiding Chief Magistrate, Adeola Adedayo, ordered the defendant to be remanded in Correctional Centre at Ikoyi pending the outcome of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions advice.
The prosecutor, Momah had earlier told the Court that the defendant with others now at large committed the offences by performing an unauthorised surgery on a resident of the home, Fatima Issah, which led to her death.
The Police alleged the offences contravened Sections 221 and 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015; Section 223 stipulates death penalty for murder, while Section 221 provides for 14 years’ jail term for conspiracy to commit murder.
