The residents of Taiwo Close in Shasha  area of Lagos are still in shock over the death of a 20-year old man, Sodiq Olorunleye, who committed suicide by jumping inside an abandoned well due to frustration.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the sad incident happened around 7pm on 28th February, 2024, shortly after worshippers finished their prayers in the mosque. The body was later brought out several hours after he jumped into the well located in front of a mosque.
According to the residents, the officials of the Lagos State Fire Service recovered the body and kept it in front of the Mosque before the owner of the Mosque contacted the Police at Shasha Division.
Some of the residents, who spoke to our correspondent, expressed shock over what happened as some said that the deceased never showed any signs of suicide or frustration, leaving those in the neighbourhood wondering what must have caused it.
Some other residents, who knew him, said that the deceased was heard complaining over an undisclosed matter that was troubling him and may have decided to end his life by jumping into the well due to frustration.
The incident was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who stated that the incident was reported at Shasha Police station by the owner of Shamseedeen Mosque on Taiwo Close, Shasha, around 7pm same day.
He stated that the owner of the mosque alleged that the deceased jumped into an abandoned well in front of the mosque and that efforts to rescue him by the neighbours proved abortive.
“The lifeless body of the victim was brought out around 12 noon by officials of the State Fire Service,” the PPRO stated.
A team of detectives was dispatched to the scene, where it was discovered that the corpse had already been prepared for burial according to Islamic rites.
 However, investigation is ongoing.
