A 37-year old man, Chukwuebuka Igwebike, has been arrested for being in possession of fake N362,000 Naira notes, which he wanted to smuggle and exchange inside a popular market before he was caught in Enugu State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Igwebike, was arrested by Police operatives from the Enugu State Command acting on a tip off, on 19th December, 2023, at about 6pm at Afor Market, Garki Awkunanaw, Enugu.
He reportedly went to the market with the money, was buying small items with the N1000 fake notes and collecting change of real Naira notes before the information leaked. The Police were contacted, who arrested and detained him for interrogation over his alleged conduct.
This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Nduker, who also confirmed that the suspect was in custody and the fake Naira notes were recovered as exhibits.
The image maker stated that the suspect confessed to the crime and revealed that he used the fake one thousand Naira notes to buy items of small prices in order to get change for genuine smaller denominations.
Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has urged citizens of the State and the public to be vigilant and wary of whom they receive and exchange all the denominations of mint Nigerian Naira with, especially this yuletide.
Hence, he encouraged the citizenry to quickly report anyone in possession of, or transacting in counterfeit Nigerian Naira notes, to the nearest Police Station for necessary policing actions.
He also stated that the suspect, Igwebike, will be charged before the Court for the alleged offence but that will be after the conclusion of investigations by the Police.
