CYRIACUS IZUEKWE
Police intelligence team from the Delta State Command has recorded a breakthrough after it recovered a bag of rice containing arms and ammunition inside a commercial vehicle.
P.M.EXPRESS reports as disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edefa.
He said on 11th June, 2021, at about 1630hrs, while team Eagle-net Special Squad were on routine patrol/stop and search along Ughelli-Port Harcourt Road, they intercepted a Mazda 626 saloon car dark green in colour with Reg. No. UGH 722 AA with six occupants, two males and four females.
All the occupants were asked to come down from the vehicle for routine searching. In the process of the search, they saw a sack containing rice. A man, whose name is not yet known among the occupants, immediately jumped into a nearby stream while running and a hot chase ensued. But all efforts to catch up with him proved abortive as he escaped into the forest.
The bag of rice was identified by other passengers as his own. When a search was conducted on the bag, 138 rounds of AK-47 live ammunitions, one AK47 magazine, one Baretta pistol magazine and a knife was recovered.
The Police preliminary investigation revealed that the occupants were all passengers that boarded the cab from Eleyele PHC heading to Ughelli.
Investigation is ongoing while all effort is being put in place to arrest the fleeing suspect.
