A 32-year old man, Sunday Abilewa, has been remanded in prison custody by a Magistrate Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for allegedly killing his 68-year old father, Abu Abilewa.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Sunday Abilewa, was apprehended by Police detectives and charged to court for murder under the Criminal Laws of the State.
The prosecutor, Abdulateef Suleiman, told the Court that the suspect on 31th December, 2024, at about 5pm, at Eberi quarters, Isua Akoko, Ondo State, allegedly caused the death of his 8-year old father, Abu Abilewa, by strangling him to death.
“The defendant allegedly approached the deceased to buy him a new motorcycle, but the deceased refused. It led to an argument and in the process, the defendant grabbed the father’s neck, which resulted in his death.”
“Efforts of the defendant’s mother to rescue the deceased proved abortive as the defendant was under the influence of hard drugs.”
The prosecutor said the offense contravened Section 316 and was punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol.II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.
However, the Court did not take his plea when he was arraigned rather ordered him to be remanded in custody at the correctional center pending the outcome of advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. F.A. Akinboboye, ordered that he should be remanded in custody pending receipt of advice from the DPP’s office, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
The matter was adjourned till 25th February, 2025, for mention.
