During a lecture at Chatham House in London, United Kingdom, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, announced that the commission has finalised a policy on Diaspora Voting, ready for implementation once the necessary constitutional amendments are made.

He commended the Nigeria Diaspora Voting Council (NDVC) for their dedicated advocacy and efforts; even though the initial bill (now revised) was passed at the third reading phase, it was voted down during the joint session.

Prof. Yakubu emphasised INEC’s commitment to transparency, highlighting that the NDVC leadership had multiple meetings with him, benefiting from his open-door policy and seeking guidance on advancing the cause of Diaspora Voting.

Undeterred by the setback, the NDVC has intensified its efforts, working closely with key stakeholders and supporters to turn the goal of Diaspora Voting into a reality for Nigerians abroad.
