Institutions, Students Applaud NELFUND Initiative

In the evolving landscape of Nigerian education, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is emerging as a beacon of hope for thousands of students across the country.
With disbursements rolling out in waves and life-changing stories pouring in from campuses nationwide, the impact of this initiative is becoming undeniably clear: NELFUND is not just a policy—it’s a lifeline.
Across universities, student voices are echoing a shared sentiment—relief, gratitude, and a renewed focus on education. Christian Onyekachi, a 500-level Chemical Engineering student at Michael Okpara University, shares how the loan has transformed his academic journey: “They’ve helped me in paying my fees. I’ve not had to run around to gather fees. Most of my handouts also, I pay for them from the upkeep,” he stated.
For Christian, and many like him, not only has the burden of sourcing funds been drastically reduced, the convenience of the application process and the timely disbursement have allowed him to focus on what truly matters—his education.
“The scheme has really helped to reduce my running around and leaving school to source for money, it gives me more time to focus on my studies,” Christian shared.
Institutions themselves have not held back in recognizing the scheme’s value. In a letter of appreciation, Professor Adenike Temidayo Oladiji, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, noted the transformational impact of the loan on their students.
“The University Management deeply appreciates the window of opportunity opened by the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration to ensure that our youths can actualize their academic aspirations.”
FUTA has already seen two major disbursements totaling over ₦186 million for more than 1,700 students, a testament to the scale and reach of the initiative.
Similarly, the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi received ₦195 million for 2,438 students. In a letter signed by Registrar Abubakar Aliyu, the university acknowledged the significant effect of the intervention.
“The intervention has not only alleviated the financial difficulties faced by the beneficiaries, but also motivated them to excel academically.”
Student stories from other institutions continue to underscore the scheme’s importance. Emmanuel Jonah, a 400-level Political Science and Public Administration student at the University of Uyo, shared that the NELFUND loan came through at a critical time.
“When I had no money at all to pay my school fees, I applied for it. It came through at the right time.”
Though he faced some delays, Emmanuel is grateful for the support and acknowledges the emotional and financial weight lifted from both himself and his family. “Actually, this is one of the first programs I’ve benefited from the federal government, and I’m really grateful for this.”
For 200-level student Samuel Udoh, also from the University of Uyo, the NELFUND loan has provided not just financial relief but a foundation for future planning: “I have been receiving the payments and I’ve been saving some. It helps me a lot in doing paperwork and other little payments.”
Samuel, who aspires to be a diplomat, sees the loan as a stepping stone toward fulfilling his ambition to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
“If NELFUND could continue doing this, it would enable people to go to school and come out better. People will have the opportunity to improve their education.”
Across all testimonies, a recurring theme stands out: the initiative is working. From prompt payments to smooth application processes, and from institutional support to individual empowerment, NELFUND is quietly revolutionizing access to higher education in Nigeria.
As the program expands and more students benefit, one thing is certain—this is not just a loan scheme; it is a generational investment.
