The newly appointed Executive Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr Kweku Tandoh has revealed that the popular schools sports championship, IBILE Games, will stage a comeback into the calendar of sports in Lagos as from this year.
Tandoh said at the Teslim Balogun, Surulere, Lagos Tuesday that because of the benefits inherent in the staging of the competition, which was redesigned from being a local government based tournament in 2015 to a school based one, the Sports Commission will ensure that the championship return either in September or October this year.
According to the chairman, IBILE Games, which had been christened Lagos State Secondary and Primary School Sports Festival was instrumental to the success of Lagos in the maiden DAWN Games, which Lagos hosted in 2014, adding that using the tournament to discover budding talent in both private and public schools in the State will be a proper platform for grassroots sports development.
Tandoh disclosed that he and other staff members of the Sports Commission will leave nothing to chance to ensure that the grandeur vision Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has for Sports in Lagos is brought to reality and yield fruits for all to see.
He further disclosed that the DAWN Games, which the State hosted in 2014 in conjunction with the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission, is also brought back as Ambode is a Governor that loves to see events that empower the youth and talent development happening in his domain.
On the Lagos Junior League, which was organized among clubs of local governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAS) in Lagos, Tandoh, who was the former Director of Sports in Lagos, said the Sports Commission will take a look at the tournament to see how best it could harmonise it with the proposed Lagos Super League which will debut very soon in the state.
