King Kosoko Royal Family Declares Jide Kosoko Oloja of Lagos-Elect

Posted on January 27, 2026

History was made on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, as the King Kosoko Royal Family formally declared Prince Abdulrafiu Babajide Akanni Kosoko as the Oloja of Lagos-elect, marking a significant moment in the enduring royal heritage of Lagos.

The historic declaration took place at the King Kosoko Palace, Ereko, Lagos Island, where members of the Royal Family gathered in their hundreds to witness the symbolic and culturally significant event.

The palace courtyard was filled with traditional rites, prayers, and a deep sense of pride as the royal family affirmed its choice.

Prince Kosoko was officially announced and presented to the gathering by the Olori Ebi General of the King Kosoko Royal Family, Alhaja Mutiat Ashabi Ali-Balogun, who raised his hands in affirmation, in accordance with long-standing custom.

She was ably assisted by the Deputy Olori Ebi General, Alhaja Oyindamola Ayepola, who is also the Head of Meshimo Ruling House.

With this declaration, Prince Kosoko becomes the Oloja of Lagos-elect, pending his traditional installation and capping by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Osuolale Okikiola Aremu Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos in line with Lagos traditions and palace protocols.

A Title Rooted in Lagos History

The title of Oloja of Lagos is one of the most revered traditional offices in the history of Lagos.

Historically, the Oloja represents leadership, cultural guardianship, and the preservation of indigenous Lagos customs, particularly among royal lineages connected to the early foundations of the city.

The office predates colonial administration and has, over centuries, remained a symbol of continuity, identity, and the resilience of Lagos’ traditional institutions.

Within the King Kosoko lineage, the Oloja title carries added historical weight, tracing its roots to King Kosoko, one of the most prominent and influential monarchs in Lagos history. The declaration of a new Oloja by the royal family is therefore not merely ceremonial but a reaffirmation of ancestral legacy and responsibility.

Prince Kosoko: Royalty Meets the Arts

Prince Abdulrafiu Babajide Akanni Kosoko, widely known as Jide Kosoko, brings to the Oloja-elect position a unique blend of royal heritage and distinguished professional accomplishment. A veteran of Nigeria’s film industry, he is one of Nollywood’s most respected actors, producers, and directors, with a career spanning several decades.

Renowned for his commanding screen presence and versatility, Prince Kosoko has featured in hundreds of films across Yoruba and English genres.

Beyond acting, he has made notable contributions as a producer and director, helping to shape the growth and global recognition of Nollywood. His work has earned him widespread respect within the creative industry and among audiences across Nigeria and the diaspora.

Family members and cultural observers at the event noted that his emergence as Oloja of Lagos-elect reflects a fusion of tradition and modern influence—royalty anchored in history, yet conversant with contemporary society and culture.

A New Chapter for the King Kosoko Royal Family

As the King Kosoko Royal Family celebrates this milestone, expectations are high that Prince Kosoko’s eventual installation will further strengthen cultural unity, promote Lagos heritage, and inspire younger generations to value tradition alongside modern achievement.

Tuesday’s declaration at Ereko stands as a defining moment, not only for the Kosoko lineage but also for the broader historical narrative of Lagos, as the city prepares to welcome a new Oloja in line with centuries-old tradition.
