Lagos Sports Family Mourn Jakande, Says Legacy Of Onikan Stadium’ll Forever Be Remembered

The Lagos State Sports Commission has joined the Lagos State Government and the good people of the state to mourn the demise of Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the 1st Executive Governor, who died last Thursday, 11th February, 2021 at the age of 91 and has since been buried.

Jakande would be arguably remembered as the Governor whose achievements in Office are still visibly seen today years after he had left office.

His administration touched different facets of human life in Lagos State including Sports.

One of the achievements of the late Jakande in Sports in Lagos was the total rebuilding and remodeling of the then Lagos City Stadium, renaming it as the Onikan Stadium which he re-opened on 2nd October, 1982.

“The Onikan Stadium, now Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena, which was built by the administration of the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande has been an edifice the Lagos Sports family are proud of. We cannot but commend and thank him for doing this for Sports in Lagos State.


” The Onikan Stadium was bestowed on Lagos Sports and we are living witnesses of how important and useful the stadium has been for us in Lagos,” said Oluwatoyin Gafaar, the Director General of Lagos State Sports Commission.

The Executive Chairman of the Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku commiserated with the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the family of the late Alhaji Jakande and the people of Lagos State for the loss. He added that the deceased has left a void which would be hard to fill.
