Lagos State College Of Nursing Celebrates International Nurses’ Week

In recognition of the tireless and invaluable contribution of Nurses to the healthcare system, the Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, joined the rest of the world to celebrate the year 2023 International Nurses’ Week which marked the anniversary and birth of Florence Nightingale the Mother and founder of Modern Nursing.

Speaking at an event organised by the College to mark the occasion, the Provost of the College, Mrs. Oyefunso Orenuga, stated that Florence Nightingale is celebrated in the world to commemorate and appreciate the efforts and outstanding contributions of Nurses in providing health care service to patients around the world.

She explained that the theme: “Our Nurses, Our Future: Breaking Grounds in Nursing Education” was chosen in recognition of the need for Nurses to understand that the profession is a noble one and it is aimed at addressing health challenges and improving global health for all through the acquisition of quality education in Nursing

Orenuga enjoined the Student Nurses to avail themselves of the necessary training exposed to and inculcated by the College in propelling them to higher grounds for a better future.

The Guest Speaker and Deputy Director, Nursing Services of the Nigerian Army, Major Margaret O. Ojewale, delivering a paper on the theme of the event, said technology is changing the world at a very fast rate, including in the area of healthcare, in order to meet the needs of patients quickly.


Ojewale explained that the purpose of technology in healthcare services is to provide better care for patients and help achieve success in healthcare services. She said it also increases patient safety, decreases medical errors and strengthens the interaction between patients and healthcare providers.

She further stated that the use of technology also enhances providers’ capabilities and patient access while improving the quality of life for some patients and saving the lives of others.

The three-day event featured sensitisation and a campaign on Hypertension, Sports Competitions and Essay Writing among others.
