Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Rural Development, led a delegation including the Technical Department team from the Office of Rural Development, to the Egun community on 31st August 2024.
Accompanied by Hon. Shabi Rasheed, the House of Assembly member representing Lagos Mainland Constituency 2, the visit was part of the State Government’s ongoing efforts to assess and address the challenges faced by rural communities in Lagos State.
The Egun community, a distinctive floating village, comprises six settlements: Oko Agbon, Adogbo, Migbewhe, Yanshiwhe, Sogunro, and Apollo.
Situated within the Iwaya CDA in the Yaba Local Council Development Area, the community is bordered by the Lagos Lagoon, Makoko, and the University of Lagos.
According to Dr Agbaje, “Our primary objective during this visit was to conduct a thorough needs assessment and devise sustainable solutions tailored to the community’s specific needs”.
“Following our assessment, I am pleased to announce that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a Type A Water Scheme and a stand-alone solar lighting project for the Egun community.”
“These projects, spearheaded by the Office of Rural Development, are designed to address critical infrastructure gaps and significantly enhance the quality of life for residents.” Dr Agabje added.
The community welcomed the delegates and expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his proactive approach in addressing their needs.
In addition to the infrastructural improvements, Hon. Shabi Rasheed, the representative for Lagos Mainland Constituency 2, awarded scholarships to three SS1 students from the community.
The SA further noted that Hon. Rasheed’s supportive gesture highlights the government’s commitment to not only improving infrastructure but also advancing education in rural areas.
“This visit and the subsequent approvals reflect the administration’s dedication to the holistic development of rural communities across Lagos State.”
“We remain committed to identifying and addressing the needs of all our communities to ensure sustainable growth and development,” Dr Agbaje concluded.
