The Honourable Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Ikeja Constituency 2, Hon Adedamola Kasumu (ARK), has commended the Lagos State Sports Commission and Gidi Sports and Tourism Limited, for organizing a 3-day Chess Clinic for students of public Secondary Schools in Lagos State.

Hon. Kasumu made this commendation at the Sports Bar, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, on Wednesday, during the first day of the 3-day Chess Clinic organized by Gidi Sports and Tourism in collaboration with the Lagos State Chess Association.

According to Hon Kasumu, former Chairman House of Assembly Committee on Youths and Sports, organizing this Chess Clinic for Students from the six Education Districts in Lagos State, is very commendable and will go a long way to improve the Intelligent Quotient (IQ) of the participants.

“Chess as a sport, is very good to be combined with education because it aids the thinking of players, with passion, the participants can garner more experience in the game” Hon. ARK said.

He stated further that if the participants show more interest in the game from the onset, Lagos would have more champions in chess.

He disclosed that it had always been a thing of interest for him even when he was the Chairman, Lagos House of Assembly Committee on Youth and Sports, to always promote lesser sports apart from football, basketball and athletics.

“This is the reason I am supporting this 3-day Chess Clinic. We need to develop the likes of Rashidi Yekini, Yusuf Ali and others in lesser sports like chess.”

“It is good and very important for students to combine education with sports; and chess is a very educative game,” he said.

Also speaking during the first day of the clinic, the Managing Director, Gidi Sports and Tourism Limited, Bello Anderson, said that the company wants to infuse sports and tourism together.

“We won’t stop at chess alone; we are going to support other sports in Lagos State.”

“By October this year, we are going to organize Competitions for these set of participants because we hope that by that time all the participants might have been exposed to the game proper, and it is going to cover the six Education Districts in Lagos State,” Anderson said

Coach Bayo Babalola, the Facilitator of the clinic, took the participating students through the rudiments and techniques of chess.

The 3- day clinic continues on Thursday and ends on Friday 9th July , 2021.
