Police operatives from the Federal Capital Territory Command have arrested a 20-year old cleaner, Ali Hassan and charged him before the Court for stealing three bicycles worth N1.9 million in Abuja.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the defendant, Hassan, was charged before the Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court for the alleged stealing.
The prosecutor, Stanley Nwaforaku, told the Court that the complainant, Mr Mohammed Aliyu of Durumi, Abuja, reported the case at the Durumi Police Station on 23rd December, 2023 and alleged that the defendant and another person now at large conspired on 17th December, 2023, at about 6:00am, stole three bicycles worth the said amount, which belonged to Jonah Izuka of Durumi, Abuja.
The prosecutor said that during Police investigation, one of the bicycles worth N400,000 was recovered from the defendant and he was subsequently charged before the Court for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
However, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Judge, Aliyu Kagarko, granted the defendant bail to the tune of N2 million with one surety in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and addresses verified by the Court.
The Court ordered that the surety must reside within the Court’s jurisdiction before it adjourned the matter till 16th February, 2024, for a hearing.
