A 25-year old man, Yahaya Mohammed, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly stabbing his 27-year old rival, Sulaiman Abass, to death with a kitchen knife during a public fight.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Cause Way, Otto area of Ebute Metta, Lagos.
According to Police sources, the suspect had a disagreement with the victim, which led to the exchange of words and later resulted into fighting between the duo.
During the fight, Mohammed reportedly took the knife and stabbed the victim on his body. The victim was said to have bled profusely before he was rushed to an undisclosed hospital but he did not make it as doctors confirmed him dead.
The victim’s corpse was deposited at the mortuary while the alleged murder was reported to the Police at Railway Station. The suspect, Mohammed, was then arrested and detained for interrogation over his conduct.
During interrogation, Mohammed told the Police that he actually did not want to kill but he died in the process because of the injury he sustained during the fight.
The Police found him culpable and consequently charged him before the Ebute Metta Magistrate Court for murder under the Criminal Law of the State.
However, the Court did not take his plea when he was arraigned following a motion moved by the prosecutor asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for legal advice.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. F.F. George, ordered his remand in custody at correctional center pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP.
The matter was adjourned for mention for the report of the DPP’s advice to be available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
