Man, 25, Gets Life Imprisonment For Defiling Neighbour’s Girl, 8

A 25-year old man, Aniedi Mfon, will spend the rest of his life in prison custody for defiling his neighbour’s 8-year old girl in Cross River State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was the judgment of the Family Court 2 of the High Court, Calabar, which found Aniedi guilty and sentenced him accordingly.
The defilement took place at Calabar town, where they reside and the convict was arrested and charged before the Court for the alleged offence where he faced trial.
The trial came to an end on Tuesday, 7th May, 2024, after the Court sentenced him to life imprisonment having found him guilty as charged.
The Presiding Judge, Justice Blessing Egwu, found Aniedi guilty and sent him to prison for the crime said to have been committed on 27th September, 2022.
While dlivering her judgement, Justice Egwu lamented the high prevalence of rape in the society and awarded the sum of N1m fine in favour of the survivor.
The case was fought by Basic Rights Council Initiative (BRCI) a non-profit organization focused on fighting rape, witchcraft branding, human rights abuse, and other repressive practices.
Reacting to the judgment, the Principal Counsel for BRIC, Barrister James Ibor, thanked the Cross River State Command of the Nigerian Police Force, led by CP Gyogon Grimah.
Barr. Ibor said the judgment is a justice that prevailed and a victory for the survivor and her family who courageously resisted bribery and intimidation throughout the pursuit of justice.
He also applauded the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Ededem Ani, the BRCI team, and Prosecutor; Patience Emmanuel Akpama, for their dedication and commitment throughout the investigation and prosecution of the case.
