Probably the death of a 26-year old man, Sodiq Yusuf, who went to the swimming pool at National Stadium in Lagos to swim and died in the process without any protection and assistance, may have exposed the lack of safety of the facilities at the stadium.

P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the late Yusuf got drown and was in the pool for several hours without the management knowing what happened. When he was eventually rescued and taken to hospital, he was already dead and the doctors merely certified him dead . The corpse was deposited at the mortuary for autopsy report.
It was gathered that the swimming pool at the National Stadium, Surulere, had become a shadow of itself and was barley maintained despite the money the management was making from it.
It was yet ascertained if the cause of the death of Yusuf inside the pool was as a result of negligence from the management as the autopsy reports have not been released by the Police.
However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident. He said on 17th November, 2019, at about 1810hrs, Police received a distress call  that one Sodiq Yusuf “m”  26, of No. 26, Hogan Bassey Street, Surulere, Lagos, allegedly got drowned while swimming at the National Stadium swimming pool in Surulere.
DSP Elkana stated that following the report, a team of Policemen was mobilized to the scene. The victim was rescued and rushed to Randle General Hospital, Surulere, where he later died.
He said that the corpse was deposited at the Mainland General Hospital morgue, Yaba, for autopsy while investigation is ongoing.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the Police have started investigation on the matter to ascertain if the cause of the death was due to negligence.
