Man, 32, Arraigned In Lagos Over Alleged Blackmail & Threats Using Lady’s Nude Image

According to the charge sheet, Charge No: 10/8/70/28, the incident occurred on April 19, 2026 at about 8:30pm at  Ayola Street, Ikotun, Lagos, within the Lagos Magisterial District.

The prosecution alleged that the defendant lured a lady, who is a professional photographer, into a close relationship. During the course of the relationship, it was alleged that the defendant obtained nude images of the lady under duress. The prosecution further alleged that after obtaining the images, the defendant began using the nude picture to threaten and intimidate her. He was accused of telling her that he would make the nude image public on social media and other platforms if she refused his sexual advances.

The offences were said to be contrary to and punishable under Sections 168(d), 406 and 173 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015. Section 168(d) covers conduct likely to cause breach of peace, Section 406 covers attempted felony by offensive publication, while Section 173 covers assault.

The defendant was arraigned before Magistrate Dosumu-Uthman and the three-count charge was read to him in open court. He pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

The prosecutor, ASP Benedict Aigbokhan, represented the Commissioner of Police. He told the court that investigations were still ongoing and asked for a date to enable the Police to present witnesses and exhibits to prove the case against the defendant. The Investigating Police Officer in the matter was listed as Inspector Afolabi Janet of Ikotun Police Station.

In her ruling, the presiding Magistrate, Dosumu-Uthman, granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦100,000 with two sureties in like sum. The court ordered that the sureties must show evidence of financial standing and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Following the bail ruling, the matter was adjourned for further hearing. The defendant was remanded in custody at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.

Legal practitioners and rights advocates who monitored the proceedings said the case highlights growing concerns around digital blackmail in Lagos. They noted that the misuse of private images to coerce and intimidate victims, especially women, has become a recurring issue that law enforcement agencies are now treating with urgency.

Cybersecurity experts have also advised members of the public, particularly professionals who work with images and videos, to be cautious about sharing personal content and to report any form of blackmail to the Police immediately.

Legal experts say the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a Court of competent jurisdiction. The case was adjourned to enable both the prosecution and defence to prepare for the next hearing.
