A 34-year old student of University of Lagos, Isaiah Enyia Ofem, has been arrested and charged for allegedly strangling a 27-year old female student, Victoria Adeyemi, inside the campus and dumping her corpse inside the canal.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 17th June, 2023, at the campus located at Akoka, Yaba area of Lagos.
However, the dastardly act later got exposed and the matter was reported to the operatives at Sabo Police Station and Ofem was arrested. He was later transferred to the SCID, Yaba, for further investigation over the alleged murder.
According to Police sources, the suspect had a disagreement with the female student over an undisclosed matter. He then targeted her in the evening, strangled her to death, secretly carried her corpse and threw it inside the canal close to the campus.
After thoroughly interrogating him, the Police found the suspect culpable and subsequently charged him before the Yaba Magistrate Court for the alleged murder, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.
The Court did not take his plea when he was arraigned following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Inspector Haruna Magaji, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for legal advice because of the nature of the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate,  O.Y. Adefope, ordered the defendant to be remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP.
The matter was adjourned for mention for the report of the DPP’s advice to be made available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
