This is not the best time for a thirty-seven-year-old man, Ayuba Ajao, who escaped being lynched by the whisker after his amorous intimacy with another man leaked out in the city of Kano.

Narrating his ordeal to P.M. EXPRESS, Ajao said that his girlfriend, Aisha Gbadamosi, found out that he was having a homosexual affair with one Leonard Johnson, instead of covering up for him, Aisha alerted the people in the community who descended on the two gay lovers.

According to him, “I returned to Nigeria on 8 July 2018 after my university education at the Estam University, Cotonou in Benin
Republic. I stayed with my uncle unemployed till 2020 when I was asked to relocate to Kano and manage my father’s business when my father and mother relocated from Kano to Abeokuta in Ogun State. My dad’s business is located at 40 Panshekara Road, Kofar Bompai, Kano.

“I had a friend whose name is Leonard Johnson whose father was murdered by unknown gunmen on 13 August 2021. His dad’s family members seized his parents’ properties, and his life was at risk in South Africa, so he relocated to Nigeria on 22 October 2021 to stay with me in Kano after the demise of his parents.

“It was the arrival of Leonard to my life that led me into the homosexual lifestyle. Though I tried to control myself, unfortunately with all my effort nothing works, Leonard and I were getting deep into the affair.

“My girlfriend Aisha became worried and suspicious because she was no longer attractive to me again. She confronted me about it and I used my job to cover up. She noticed the closeness I was having with Leonard but thought it was normal until the day she caught Leonard kissing me on the forehead. She became more suspicious of our movements after that day, and we were careful too.

“The bubble burst on 18 May 2022, the day Aisha caught us red-handed. She was not patient enough to listen to my explanation before she rushed out and shouted “abomination”. Before we knew what was happening, some community boys had filled my apartment at 84 FCE Road, Kano. I managed to escape through the backyard, but Leonard was not all that lucky to escape. He was beaten to a coma before some people were able to rescue him and took him to the police station.

“It was while in the hideout that I received a call from one of my neighbours that these community boys had set my father’s shop on fire. The person said I should find a way to leave Kano because the community boys in conjunction with some Islamic clerics have vowed to kill me if they found me. Homosexuality has been outlawed in Nigeria.

“With the situation now, I don’t know what to do again.”
