Man, 38, Docked For Knocking Down Wife During Public Fight

A 38-year old man, Samuel Umeojili, has displayed his boxing skills on his wife, Ogechukwu Umeojili, by knocking her down and she slipped into coma during a public fight in Ekiti State. 
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 15th February, 2024, by 9.00am at No. 2 Idolofin Street, Ado-Ekiti, where they reside.
He has been arrested and charged before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court on a two-count charge of assault and breach of public peace.
The Prosecutor, Inspector Olasunkanmi Bamikole, informed the Court that the defendant committed the offences by beating her to coma, thereby conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by turning his wife into a punching bag.
According to him, the offences contravene Sections 185 and 181 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021 and attracts several years of imprisonment.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him while there was no counsel to defend him.
The prosecutor asked the Court to adjourn the matter to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses for trial before the Court.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Saka Afunso, who ruled that the offence was bailable under the law, consequently admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N25,000, with one surety in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and addresses verified by the Court.
 The matter was adjourned till 29th February, 2024, for hearing while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional centre pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
