A 41-yeaar old man, Sani Haruna, has landed in trouble in Lagos State over the death of a suspected thief, late Omolewa Dickson, who snatched his phone and was escaping before he held and killed him during the scuffle.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Haruna, has been arrested and he is being charged for murder.
The alleged murder took place at Ipodo/Olowu Junction, Ikeja area of Lagos.
According to Police sources, the suspect, Haruna, was said to be walking in the area before the deceased accosted him and attempted to snatch his phone from him. He resisted, engaged him in a scuffle and killed him in the process.
After the incident, Haruna wanted to escape but he was held and handed over to the Police in the area. He was later transferred to the SCID, Yaba, for further investigation over the death.
The corpse was deposited at the mortuary for autopsy report over what might have caused his death but the Police insisted that Haruna has no right to kill the victim because it was against the law.
After interrogation, Haruna was found culpable and subsequently charged before the Yaba Magistrates Court for murder.
When he was arraigned, the Court did not take his plea following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Mr. S.A. Adebesin, asking the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. P.E. Nwaka, ordered his remand in the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when the DPP’s report will be ready and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP.
The matter was adjourned pending the outcome of DPP’s advice, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
