A 45-year old man, Yusuf Muhammad, has asked the Court to order his embattled wife, Murjanatu Nasiru, to pay him the sum of N1.6m as compensation before he would granted her request for divorce after five years of marriage.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was the submission of Muhammad before the Sharia Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, where his wife, Mrs. Murjanatu Nasiru, dragged him for the dissolution of their marriage that lasted for several years.
Muhammad made the request following Nasiru’s prayer for divorce by way of redemption (Khul’I) and had earlier promised to refund the N30,000 which had paid as dowry.
But contrary to her submission, Muhammad told the Court that he paid N50,000 as her dowry and had suffered serious damage since he married Nasiru as he was abandoned by his family members, who were against the marriage.
“I gave N50,000 as her dowry not N30,000 and she made me to lose the N35,000 monthly allowance I used to receive from my brothers as a result of ill health. My brothers stopped sending me the allowance since 2018 because I got married to her. She therefore, has to pay me the money before I grant her divorce”, he said.
Murjanatu, through her lawyer, Mr. Abubakar Abdullahi, said that there was no prior agreement to pay the defendant any money if she was no longer interested in the marriage and wondered why he would demand such amount from her.
“I don’t want to continue with the marriage because I don’t want to disobey God,” she said.
The Presiding Judge, Malam Rilwanu Kyaudai, having listened to the parties, adjourned the matter for the respondent to produce her witnesses in the matter to determine if she will pay her husband any money as compensation for demanding for the dissolution of the marriage because she no longer loves him.
