Police detectives at State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba-Lagos, have commenced investigation to unravel the circumstances that led to the disappearance of the placenta of a pregnant woman who was delivered of a baby in popular hospital in Lagos.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that Police operatives at Aguda Division of the Lagos State Command led by the DPO, SP Elizabeth Opadola, have arrested the Medical Director of Olaniba Memorial Hospital, Aguda area of Lagos, over the alleged missing placenta of a woman who was delivered of a baby in the hospital.

The Medical Director, Dr. Mrs. Adenike Olaniba, was arrested at the hospital located at Olatunde Onimole Street, Aguda area of Surulere and transferred to the SCIID Panti, Yaba Lagos, for interrogation after she was unable to provide the missing placenta as then requested by the family.

The arrest followed a complaint by one Mr. Ekong, whose wife was delivered of a baby through a successful Caesarian operation in the hospital. But the joy of the arrival of the baby was cut short after it was discovered that the placenta disappeared from the hospital. All efforts to trace it proved abortive as the management was unable to explain what happened to the placenta.

Both the husband and the new mother became terribly afraid over what might have happened to the placenta as it was generally believed that it could be sold for ritual purposes. Hence, the matter was reported to the Police and Dr. Olaniba was arrested and later transferred to the SCIID for interrogation.

When P.M.EXPRESS correspondent visited the hospital located at Olaniba Street in Aguda, one of the staff confirmed the arrest but declined to speak on the matter saying that it was only Dr. Olaniba that would speak on the matter and she was not around.
However, Police sources at SCIID confirmed the arrest of the suspect and the surgeon who carried out the operation on the woman and they were said to be giving the Police useful information over the placenta.

Police sources at Panti said from the evidence available, Dr. Olaniba may likely be charged to Court over the missing placenta for not providing it as requested by the Police to prove that the management did not sell the placenta.

Ye of little faith. I wonder what u r looking for
in the placentaa. Those thinking of rituals should have a rethink. To me rituals does not have any effect. Placenta is an ordinary substance that accompanies a baby after delivery. Stop disturbing your life with superstitious beliefs. As a matter of fact, placenta is waste product after delivery. I wonder what u want to do with it… That’s my own opinion.

  3. Piro Okoh says:

Placenta as waste product is usually dumped in a pit called placenta pit. This pit is a requirement by the inspecting Ministry officials for approval to be given for the operation of a Maternity or Clinic. So Nigerians now demand for and carry home placenta? Na waooo

  4. Nwachukwu C.O. says:

Why are we so superstitious in this country ? Everything is ritual, ritual, ritual. Placenta that is commonly discarded is what they are arresting and embarrassing a doctor for. The police that are threatening to charge the matter to court, what will be the charge? ‘Stealing of placenta’ abi? Laughable. That’s why we are not making any progress like the rest of the world.

  5. Samuel Eze says:

I wonder how people will survive in Nigeria, lots of insecurity in the country. Everyday we hear news of different kind. God help us
