A 34-year old medical doctor, Kelvin Royce, been remanded at the Correctional Centre for allegedly swindling his lady friend, Amaka Ibeh, to the tune of N6m for securing admission into a Canadian University and it turned out to be a scam in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that it followed the order of the Area Court in Kubwa, Abuja, for his remand in custody having been arraigned before the Court for the alleged offence.
The prosecutor, John Okpa, told the Court that the complainant, Amaka Ibeh, reported the matter at the Byazhin Police Divisional Headquarters, Abuja, on 25th September, 2023, that she paid N6 million in instalments to the defendant to help her process admission into a Canadian University sometime in February 2022.
However, since the complainant paid the said sum to the defendant, he absconded and did not process the any admission as he promised. And having waited in vain, she reported the matter to the Police, who then trailed, eventually arrested and detained him at the station for interrogation over his alleged conduct.
Aftertthorough interrogation, the Police found him culpable and consequently charged him before the Court based on the offence he allegedly committed, which contravened the provisions of Section 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The Counsel to the defendant, Barr. Enabosi Anenih, moved a motion for bail application for the defendant citing Sections 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended and 158, 162, 165(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). Anenih prayed the Court to use its discretion to grant the defendant bail in the most liberal terms.
The prosecutor, Okpa however, opposed the bail application, saying that the defendant had earlier absconded, which was in violation of the provisions of Section 162 of ACJA.
The Presiding Judge, Ibrahim Rufai, adjourned the matter till 2nd October, 2023, for ruling in the defendant’s bail application made by the defence counsel, Anenih, while the defendant will remain in custody pending when he will be granted bail.
Justice will prevail…I have hope.
