DANIEL EZEIGWE
The wife of the Executive Governor of Anambra Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, has said that the ongoing cervical cancer screening and treatment exercises in the state offer every Anambra woman a chance to life.
Mrs Soludo who stated this in Awka, noted that her continued advocacy for women in the state to get involved in the ongoing exercise, is driven by a burning desire to ensure that each of them is safe from the disease rated as fourth commonest cancer among women.
According to the governor’s wife, the exercise which began on the twentieth of this month and will last for six months, covering five thousand women, offers a great opportunity for women to examine themselves and take note of their statuses as regards the dangerous disease.
She noted that while there is no particular description of how one can contract the virus which causes the sickness, any woman who is sexually active is already at risk of being infected, adding that getting tested is one solid step towards getting saved from the deadly disease.
The governor’s wife also assured that the exercise has been strategically planned to reach even woman in the remotest parts of the state, explaining that after the six months expiration of the first phase, the programme would be continued but only to be benefitted by women who are registered with the Anambra State Health Insurance Agency.
Mrs Soludo also stressed the importance of ensuring that the screening and treatment exercises reach school girls in the captured age brackets, and urged parents to encourage their female children who are fifteen years of age and above to also take active part in the exercise.
She explained that as a Cervical Cancer Ambassador in Anambra State, she is committed to ensuring that the ongoing campaign bears desirable fruit in the state, maintaining that a single woman’s life lost to the disease, asks a challenging question on commitment to eliminating it completely.
She further reassured the determination of her husband’s administration to implementing the best health policies for Ndi Anambra, stating that every move to better the state’s health system, prioritizes its overall benefits for every resident of the state.
