MTN Champs Set To Hold In 4 Legendary Stadiums Across Nigeria

In the heart of Nigeria’s bustling cities, and vibrant communities, there lies some consecrated grounds where sporting history has been formulated and eternalized.

These iconic stadiums have stood as a monument to the passion, resilience and triumph of Nigerian sports culture.

MTN has selected four of these stadiums to host the 2nd season of MTN Champs Tournament.

Here are the four stadiums and some fun facts behind them.

Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba: Where Legends Are Made

Named after the Nigerian football legend, Stephen Keshi, he represented the country at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, captaining the Super Eagles to victory in the latter.

He was also successful as the coach of the 2013 Super Eagles squad leading them to the trophy thus becoming the only Nigerian to have won the AFCON as both player and coach.

He also played club football in five countries, most notably Belgium, where he won the Belgian league championship with R.S.C. Anderlecht in 1991.

Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba holds a special place in the hearts of sports enthusiasts across Nigeria.

With its intimate atmosphere and passionate crowds, this historic venue has been the battleground for countless footballing and epic rivalries, this stadium evokes memories of glory.

Lekan Salami Stadium: Where Dreams Soar

Named in honour of Chief Lekan Salami, a Nigerian businessman, football administrator and socialite, the arena also known as Adamasingba, represents a testament to the sporting prowess of the western regional part of Nigeria.

The iconic stadium has become a beacon of sporting excellence for the people of Oyo State, with its majestic grandstand and sprawling field, and its striking architectural marvel that captures grandeur sporting essence.

The stadium is the proud home of ground of the Shooting Stars Football Club, one of Nigeria’s most storied football club with rich history and of success and tradition.

Beyond its role as a sporting arena, the stadium serves as a vibrant community hub and social nexus where people connect, celebrate and unite. The stadium remains a symbol of inspiration and empowerment.

The Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium

Located in the largest city of Rivers State and one of Nigeria’s populous states, The Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium in Port Harcourt boasts of modern amenities.

Built to international standards, the stadium serves as a multifunctional venue for a wide range of sport activities.

The Adokiye Ameiesmaka Stadium is named after former player with Nigeria’s National football team and winner of the African Nations Cup in 1980, Adokiye Ameiesmaka.

Adokiye is also the former Chairman of Sharks Football Club and a former Attorney General of Rivers State.

The Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium has witnessed unforgettable moments and the electrifying atmosphere creates the perfect stage for track and field excellence and passionate fan support.

The next MTN CHAMPS event will take place in Ibadan from Friday, April 5 to Monday, April 8.
