A housewife, Ramat Joke, has pleaded with an Area Court in Centre-Igboro, Ilorin, Kwara State, to dissolve the marriage to her husband, Habeeb Atanda, because he was a drug addict, who steals her money to buy hard drugs.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the Court granted her prayer and consequently dissolved their marriage and directed the parties to move their separate ways.
The embattled Joke, in her divorce petition, told the Court that she was not aware that her husband, Atanda, was hooked on drugs before their marriage. She only discovered that he was hooked on drugs and was a smoker after they got married.
“All efforts I made to make him change failed. His parents couldn’t stop him from smoking.”
“My husband steals from me to support his habits. He does not provide for me,” she said.
However,  in response, Mr. Atanda denied stealing from his wife but accepted that he was hooked on cigarettes and not hard drugs.
Atanda said his wife was the cause of his job loss due to her nagging and accepted her divorce request so that they will move their separate ways.
The Presiding Judge, AbdulQadir Umar, said that marriage was expected to be a mutual understanding, that should be productive.
”In a situation where there are problems, divorce should be allowed,” he said.
Mr. Umar therefore, dissolved the marriage between the two parties and ordered that the applicant should observe three months Iddah period as dictated in Islam before she remarries.
