We have not left APC. 2027 is our chance to prove ourselves again.”
That was the reaction of members of Ndigbo in Lagos APC after the http://P.M.EXPRESS report on Ndigbo in APC in Lagos and the Tinubu 2027 battle became the most-read story on the platform on Saturday.
The report on Ndigbo in APC in Lagos and the Tinubu 2027 battle has continued to generate reactions among Ndigbo in Lagos State and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The report, which examined the future of Ndigbo in Lagos APC after Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party won Lagos in the 2023 presidential election, became the most-read story on http://P.M.EXPRESS on Saturday, ahead of other stories on the platform.
On Sunday morning, members of the group and political observers in Lagos began to react to the issues raised in the report, especially the question of relevance, inclusion and mobilisation ahead of 2027.
Some members of Ndigbo in Lagos APC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the report reflected the true feelings of many members who feel they are being sidelined in the party after 2023.
They said despite their loyalty to the APC and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, many Ndigbo in Lagos feel they are now being blamed for the 2023 loss in Lagos, even though the election was influenced by many factors beyond the Igbo vote.
“We have been in APC since the beginning. We campaigned, we mobilised, we defended the party in Lagos when it was not popular to do so. To now say we are no longer relevant is painful,” one member said.
Another member said the group, under the leadership of Chief Joe Igbokwe, Leader of Ndigbo in APC in Lagos State, remains committed to the party and to the Tinubu 2027 project.
“Chief Igbokwe has not left APC. We have not left APC. 2027 is an opportunity to prove ourselves again,” the member said.
However, other APC stakeholders in Lagos hold a different view. They insist that the party must learn from 2023 and rebuild its structures ahead of 2027, without depending on any single ethnic group.
According to them, the Tinubu 2027 battle in Lagos will be won by grassroots mobilisation, unity among all residents, and delivery of good governance, not by ethnic sentiments.
Political observers say both sides have a point. They argue that Ndigbo remain a major voting bloc in Lagos and cannot be ignored, but they also argue that Ndigbo in Lagos APC must show stronger grassroots presence beyond Lagos Island and the big markets.
“2023 showed that social media noise is not votes. 2027 will be decided on the streets, in the markets, in the churches, in the mosques and at the polling units,” an observer said.
As the reactions continue, one thing is clear: Ndigbo in APC in Lagos have heard the message from the http://P.M.EXPRESS report, and 2027 will be their test.
Whether they will regain their influence or lose it completely will depend on how the party leadership manages them in the coming months, and how they mobilise their people on the ground.
http://P.M.EXPRESS will continue to follow the story.
