In the intricate world of politics, loyalty and gratitude are qualities that distinguish great leaders from ordinary players. As leaders ascend the political ladder, the importance of sportsmanship, mutual respect, and institution-building cannot be overstated. The same holds true for Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, who is currently at a critical juncture in his political career.

While it is undeniable that politics is often a game of interests, it is equally essential to remember the values that sustain long-term relevance and respect. One of these values is the recognition of benefactors and mentors, who have contributed to one’s rise. Obasa, a man who has benefited from the support and goodwill of his benefactor, must resist any attempt to be swayed into actions that could undermine the relationship. Gratitude, after all, is a mark of maturity, and no leader truly succeeds without understanding the importance of their roots.

True leadership is not about engaging in unnecessary power struggles or allowing oneself to be used as a pawn in the larger political chess game. Instead, it is about fostering unity, embracing sportsmanship, and working collaboratively to achieve shared goals. The art of losing gracefully, when necessary, is as important as the art of winning, for it is in these moments that character is truly revealed.

Moreover, as a seasoned politician, Obasa should focus on building his own political institution—a legacy that will outlive temporary positions and fleeting victories. By nurturing young leaders, supporting grassroots development, and standing firm on principles of integrity and fairness, he can create a political dynasty that will remain influential for generations.

It is imperative for Obasa to understand that political relevance is sustained not by conflicts but by alliances, respect, and service to the people. Rather than being drawn into confrontations with his benefactor or other stakeholders, he should channel his energy into developmental projects, legislative excellence, and policies that will positively impact the lives of Lagosians.

In conclusion, history remembers those who build, not those who destroy. Obasa has a unique opportunity to rise above petty politics and solidify his place as a respected leader. By embracing sportsmanship, strengthening alliances, and focusing on building a strong political institution, he can leave a lasting legacy that will be remembered with admiration and pride. It is a call to choose progress over conflict, unity over division, and gratitude over resentment.
