Operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, of the Ogun State Police Command have recorded a major breakthrough with the arrest of two suspected members of a notorious “One Chance” robbery syndicate operating within Abeokuta, the state capital.
The suspects were identified as Bidemi Tijani, 29, and Olajide Rasaq, 42. According to the Command, they were apprehended on August 15, 2026, following credible intelligence received from members of the public.
“One Chance” is a term commonly used to describe a form of robbery where criminals pose as commercial vehicle operators to lure unsuspecting passengers into their vehicles. Once the victims are inside, they are robbed of valuables such as mobile phones, cash, ATM cards, and other personal belongings. In some cases, victims are also harmed or dumped in isolated areas.
The Ogun State Police Command stated that the VCRU acted swiftly after receiving information that members of the syndicate were sighted inside a commercial taxi heading toward the Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta. The operatives immediately mobilized, tracked the vehicle, and intercepted it before the suspects could carry out their operation.
During preliminary interrogation, both Bidemi Tijani and Olajide Rasaq reportedly admitted to being active members of the gang responsible for terrorizing commuters across different parts of the state capital. The Police said the confessions are helping investigators to identify other members of the syndicate who are currently at large. Efforts are also ongoing to recover exhibits and vehicles suspected to have been used in previous criminal activities.
Speaking on the development, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the VCRU team for their professionalism, swift response, and tactical execution of the operation. He noted that the arrest reflects the Command’s commitment to making Ogun State safer for residents, commuters, and visitors.
CP Ojajuni further reassured the public that the Police will not relent in the fight against violent crime. “There will be no hiding place for criminals in Ogun State. We are deploying intelligence-led policing and community partnership to dismantle these syndicates,” he said.
The Commissioner also used the opportunity to urge residents to be cautious when boarding commercial vehicles, especially unregistered taxis. He encouraged commuters to take note of vehicle details, avoid isolated routes at night, and report any suspicious movement immediately.
Members of the public can reach the Ogun State Police Command through the Gateway Shield Toll-Free line: 0800 000 9111, or the emergency lines: 09164859299 and 09154293464.
The Command confirmed that investigation is ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court once it is concluded.
