Olowogbowo Walk For Unity: Prominent Elders Lead Youths For Community Harmony

The Olowogbowo Community Association on Sunday held a ‘Walk For Unity’ with a call for a united neighbourhood, harmony, peace, and violence free environment on Lagos Island.

The residents, who gathered in their thousands, kick-started the Walk for Unity at the Olowogbowo underbridge through Broad Street,  Marine, CMS, General Hospital Road, to State House, Bonny Camp, Adeola Odeku, to Bar Beach and down to U-turn Onikan inward TBS, to St George to Tinubu Square connected IGA Taiwo Olowo inward Broad Street to Olowogbowo underneath, where the walk terminated and the crowd of residents were entertained.

Alhaji Kolapo Durojaiye, Secretary of Olowogbowo Community Association, speaking about the walk, said that the purpose of this walk was unity. He highlighted that the Olowogbowo community consists of areas; Apogbon, Offin, Idumota, Kosoko, Davies and others. As a result of disunity, thuggery, and violence, the community elders and leaders decided to join the walk to encourage peace and harmony and a violence free community.

According to him, “The event to ensure that peace reigns in all the areas of our communities of Olowogbowo with harmony. Throughout the walk,  security personnel were on standby and no violence or casualty was recorded while smoking and drinking alcohol were not allowed”.

“The Walk went well and met our aspirations and projections. The matter of drug abuse was raised during the movement for the youth to learn to be tolerant and avoid social vices.”

“The different inscriptions displayed showed that we support the government in drive against drug abuse and to say no to violence. Before appealing to the government, we need to appeal to ourselves. A community without peace, will witness no progress and development.”

The Chairman, Alao Okanlawo Oke-Olowogbo, said that the ‘Walk for  Unity’, which aimed to create peace and harmony, witnessed a large turnout.

“I give glory to God for making it a successful one. My appreciation also goes to the security personnel, who ensured peace and order throughout the walk.”

“The walk is a form of exercise, which is good for health. I therefore, enjoin the populace to always exercise.

“The purpose of this walk was for unity and am opportunity to keep fit. This is the way to give back to our community by creating communal love and understanding by seeing ourselves as one indivisible entity.”
